What Are Porcelain Veneers?

Porcelain veneers are replacement teeth that unlike dentures are fitted permanently in your mouth by placing them over your original teeth.

Many people choose to have porcelain veneers fitted because they are not happy with their own teeth.

They could be damaged, stained or even crooked, and you may want full mouth restoration.

Your original teeth need to be trimmed down to allow the dental veneers to be attached.  The dentist will then give you a local anesthetic to numb the area, an impression of your teeth will then be made, and quite often it is then sent off to have your veneers made.

Sometimes you may be fortunate enough to be able to have your veneers fitted the same day, depending on which type of surgery you visit. For example, a dentist that specializes in cosmetic dentistry may be able to make them the same day.

Before the dentist can permanently bond the veneer to your teeth he/she needs to check how it looks and more often than not they will need filing down to fit. When they are ready to be fitted properly the dentist will apply a special cement on the veneer, which is then placed on your tooth.

Once in place the dentist will use a special beam which activates chemicals which are in the cement. This causes it to harden and stay in place.

Usually when you have veneers fitted you have a full mouth restoration, as apposed to just a couple of veneers as this would not look right.

Porcelain veneers cost a significant amount of money. They will more than likely not be covered under your dental insurance, as they are done for cosmetic purposes not as normal dental treatment.

The price of veneers all depends on the state you live in.  You can expect to pay anywhere between $500 to $1300 per tooth.

The great thing about veneers is they just need to be treated like you would treat your normal teeth, regular brushing, flossing and regular dental treatment.

Veneers will usually last anywhere between five and ten years before they need replacing.

If you have rotten teeth and several fillings it is not recommended that you have veneers fitted, as your teeth can still decay even with veneers fitted.

Some people decide to travel abroad to have their dental treatment undertaken including having veneers fitted, because the cost is much less than it is in this country.  This is what is known as a dental holiday.
